Is It Difficult to Become a Driving Instructor?

June 9, 2025

If you’re thinking about starting a new career as a driving instructor, you might be wondering what’s involved and how tough it really is.

In this guide, we’ll walk you through:

  1. Exactly what you need to qualify
  2. The tricky parts of training (and how to handle them)
  3. Real tips from instructors who’ve been through it

The Basics of Becoming a Driving Instructor

First things first: you must be at least 21 years old and have held a full UK driving licence for three years or more.

While your licence doesn’t need to be completely clean, serious offences like drink driving could disqualify you.

Three Official Driving Tests

You’ll need to pass these DVSA exams in order:

  1. Part 1: Theory & Hazard Perception
This isn’t your learner’s theory test. You’ll face 100 road law questions (score 85%+) and identify hazards in video clips (57/75 points). Miss the mark? You get three tries before waiting two years to restart.
  2. Part 2: Show You Can Drive
Here’s where you prove your skills. Examiners watch for advanced control, safety checks, and flawless manoeuvres. Five minor mistakes are allowed – but one serious error fails you.
  3. Part 3: Teaching Test
The toughest hurdle. You’ll give a 45-minute lesson while being graded on how well you explain techniques, spot errors, and keep learners calm. Only 37% pass first time, so practice mock lessons beforehand.

Driving Instructor Background Check

Before you even book Part 1, you’ll need an enhanced DBS check. This looks at your criminal record and ensures you’re “fit and proper” to teach vulnerable learners. Minor old convictions? They’re usually okay, but serious crimes may block your application.

Driving Instructor Personality

Great instructors aren’t just licensed but they’re:

  1. Patient enough to guide nervous teens and hesitant adults.
  2. Clear communicators who break down complex rules into simple tips
  3. Adaptable to different learning styles (visual, hands-on, etc.)
  4. Safety-obsessed, prioritising defensive driving over just passing tests

Long term Commitment

Once qualified, you’ll renew your ADI badge every four years and pass regular teaching assessments. Many instructors also take extra courses on electric vehicles or anxiety management to stay competitive.
