Medical Conditions You Must Report to the DVLA

Medical Conditions You Must Report to the DVLA

September 27, 2025

The government website provides a complete A-Z list of more than 100 medical conditions that need to be disclosed.

Failing to notify a relevant medical condition can result in a fine of up to £1,000 and prosecution if you are involved in an accident.

Are You Fit to Drive?

To make sure you’re still fit to drive, it’s important to have regular eye exams, evaluate yourself honestly, and maintain your health.

You must disclose to the DVLA any “notifiable” medical conditions that could impact your ability to drive. If you don’t, there may be dire repercussions.

Medical Conditions

Medical conditions that must report to DVLA include:

  1. Diabetes (particularly when insulin is used to treat it)
  2. Syncope (blackouts or fainting)
  3. Heart disorders (including pacemakers, atrial fibrillation, and arrhythmias, heart attacks)
  4. Seizures and epilepsy
  5. Mini-strokes or strokes (if issues continue after a month)
  6. Glaucoma and other severe ocular disorders
  7. Significant memory issues and dementia
  8. Neurological disorders (such Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and motor neurone disease)
  9. Significant limb impairments or amputations
  10. Severe head injuries
  11. Defects in the visual field

The DLVA website provides a detailed list of more than 100 medical conditions that need to be disclosed. If you fail to provide the relevant medical condition detail, you may face prosecution and a fine of up to £1,000.

Why You need Eyesight Checkups for Driving?

You must be able to see a car number plate (produced after September 1, 2001) from 20 meters away in order to legally drive, even if you need to use glasses or contact lenses.

You must wear glasses or contact lenses whenever you drive if you have a weak eyesight.

It is highly recommended to have eye checkup on a regular basis, usually every two years, or sooner if you observe changes in your vision.
