What is Pass Plus and Do You Need It?

June 4, 2025

If you’ve just passed your driving test, you might be wondering, “What’s next?”

That’s where the Pass Plus course comes in. It’s a specific course designed for new drivers, that will help you get better at driving after you get your license.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is an optional training course that you can take once you’ve passed your driving test. DVSA-approved driving instructors run it and usually takes around 6 hours to complete.

The goal of this course is to increase your driving safety. Some insurance firms even provide auto insurance discounts to drivers who pass the course.

What Do I Learn on a Pass Plus Course?

The course covers six key areas that aren’t always taught during regular driving lessons:

  1. Town Driving: Learn how to deal with busy streets, roundabouts, and tricky junctions.
  2. All-Weather Driving: Get tips on how to stay safe in rain, fog, ice, and other poor conditions.
  3. Driving on Rural Roads: Country roads may be small and winding. Learn how to deal with blind curves, tractors, and unexpected hazards.
  4. Night Driving: Driving after dark is a whole different experience for a new driver. You’ll practise using headlights, spotting hazards early, and avoiding glare.
  5. Driving on Dual Carriageways: These fast roads need sharp observation and planning. You’ll learn to overtake, merge, and keep safe distances.
  6. Driving on Motorways: The standard driving exam does not include motorways. On this part of the course, you’ll learn how to join, leave, and drive at high speeds safely.

Is Pass Plus an Intensive Driving Course?

Nope. It’s not like an intensive driving course where you try to pass your test in a few days. Pass Plus is a short, focused add-on. You’ve already passed your test—this course just makes you better and safer on the road.

How Much Does a Pass Plus Driving Course Cost?

Prices vary depending on your driving instructor or school. On average, it costs between £240 and £350.

Some councils in the UK offer discounts, so it’s worth checking with your local authority. You might also save money later through car insurance discounts.
