Tips from our expert instructors to help you pass your Driving Instructor Exam the first time.
We have you covered specifically if you are preparing for the Part 2 and Part 3 Tests.
General Exam Tips:
- Practice makes you perfect. You have to practice as much as you can, not just on the test day. It’s all about steady improvement.
- Make sure both you and your car look clean, tidy, and professional. First impressions matter a lot.
- Learn more about the test area. Before your test, take a quick drive around the area to scout things out. Check for any roadworks or weird traffic, and keep an eye on the weather. This helps you warm up and gives you an edge on the test.
- Confidence is the key to success. Stay open-minded and focus on what you need to do to succeed.
- Make sure you understand what the examiner is looking for before the test. If you’re not sure, ask your trainer. You can’t prepare well if you don’t know what’s expected of you!
- Get plenty of rest the night before the test, eat a healthy meal, and drink enough water. This will help you feel energized and focused when it’s time to take the test.
Driving Instructor Exam Tips (Part 2)
- Drive like you’re already taking the test. Every time you drive before your Part 2 exam, aim to drive at the level you need for the test. With enough practice, it’ll feel natural.
- Pay attention to the little things. Know the highway code really well and stay focused for the whole hour. Also prepare for the “show me, tell me” questions, they’ll be asked during the test.
- Drive like a professional. Treat this like a serious driving test, not just a learner’s test. Even if you make a mistake, don’t worry. Just keep your focus on the next step.
Driving Instructor Exam Tips (Part 3)
- Make each lesson feel special. Every student is different, so adjust your lessons to fit their needs.
- If you work with someone who’s nervous or inexperienced, it can be harder to adjust if things don’t go as planned. Pick a student who’s reliable, easy to talk to, and can adapt when needed.
- Ask questions and pay close attention. Don’t just ask questions to impress the examiner. Listen to what your student has to say and use that to guide the lesson.
- Don’t make things too complicated. Keep the lesson clear, easy to understand, and interesting. Your main goal is to show how well you can teach, not to impress with everything you know.
- Stay calm during the test. Remember, the Part 3 test is just you teaching while someone observes.
- Don’t over-plan your lesson. Things might change during the test, so you need to be flexible and ready to adapt.
- Keep your lessons balanced. Make sure each 2-hour driving lesson includes time for a recap, briefing, setting goals, and a debrief at the end.
