Learning to drive can seems scary at first so here are GoodLuck Driving School’s top tips on how to prepare for your first driving lessons.
Things you need to prepare before your first driving lessons
- Provisional Licence – Bring both the card and a valid licence check code to your first lesson. If you need one, apply online for a provisional license or pick up a form at your local post office. Lost part of your licence? Replace it online, by phone, or by post.
- Budget – Plan how you’ll pay for your lessons. Stopping due to lack of funds will slow your progress, so make sure you have a plan.
- Time Commitment – Learning to drive takes regular practice. Aim for a two-hour lesson each week with a professional instructor.
- Mindset – Stay positive and be ready to learn. Mistakes happen, but laughing them off helps you stay focused.
- Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol – Caffeine can heighten nerves, so skip tea and coffee before your lesson. And, of course, don’t drink alcohol the night before or on the day.
- Dress Comfortably – Wear comfy clothes and proper shoes that let you feel the pedals. Avoid boots, heels, or flip-flops.
- Get Good Sleep – A well-rested mind absorbs information better, so make sure you sleep well the night before.
- Be Prepared – On the day, bring your licence, payment for the lesson, and glasses if you wear them.
Tips to improve between the driving lesson
- Keep a Learning Journal – After each lesson, note down what you practiced, what went well, and what needs work. This helps you reflect and plan for your next lesson. If you’re practicing with someone, use your notes to focus on weak areas.
- Study Theory and Hazard Perception – Use online resources and books to revise for your theory test and hazard perception test. The sooner you pass, the sooner you can focus fully on practical driving lessons.
